Florida is famous for its vast array of sandy, panoramic beaches. However when planning a family vacation, it might be difficult to pick the perfect beach destination from a literal sea of choices.

In order to pick the ideal waterfront destination, you first should take a look at the individual drawing points, attractions and geographic characteristics of each beach; whether it's a popular tourist mecca or a secluded seaside retreat.

When the public thinks of Florida beaches, the first thing that seems to come to mind is Miami Beach; a center of both cultural and recreational activities. From swimming to sports, shopping to socializing, there's always something to do in Miami. This beach is considered one of the world's best.

Another well known Florida beach is St. Augustine, where people are known to 'drive the dunes' in their automobiles (where the law allows, that is) as well as swim, surf and bask in the sun.

Daytona Beach stands among the most popular beaches, as well as a frequent spring break destination. Surfers, tourists and aquatic athletes flood the sands of Daytona, also known for its association to the popular Daytona 500 automotive race. And like Miami, shopping and cultural activities abound at Daytona Beach.

Also well known is St. Augustine Beach, a place of sand dunes and lush natural beauty. Aside from the usual beachfront activities of surfing, sunning and swimming, some people also enjoy driving the beach, in areas where cars are permitted.

Part of the Space Coast, Cocoa Beach sits just south of Cape Canavarel. Yet even someone who is not a fan of astronauts and aeronautic history can take advantage of the beach's lush surf and sun activities. Swimmers, surfers and sailing enthusiasts visit Cocoa Beach to get a taste of the tropics.

Pure ivory sands distinguish Clearwater Beach, known for its day cruises, aquarium, and aqua sports. Although not one of the better known beaches in Florida, Clearwater Beach is custom made for ideal family vacations. It also is known for its shopping opportunities, and its proximity to theaters, restaurants and other attractions.

Panama City Beach, located along the north coast, boasts activities for all ages. While kids enjoy the marine and family fun parks located at the beach, adults can fish, dive, and visit beach bars and restaurants.

You could take a day cruise or visit the aquarium at Clearwater Beach, a beach known for pure crystalline sands. Theaters and restaurants are plentiful and conveniently located nearby this hidden jewel of central Florida.

One of the few true beaches in the area of central Florida, Hudson Beach is known for its classic beach houses, activities like surfing, shelling and sailing, and miles of lush sands. Plus the beach is just a stone's throw away from a community theater, numerous restaurants and other attractions.

So there are your choices; pick your beach and get to planning your Florida vacation. The surf and sand await you!
